Before talking about top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi
I’ve heard about Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Pai, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, and Koh Phangan. But I didn’t know about Krabi until my 19-year-old friend asked me to go to Krabi to celebrate her 20th birthday together. That was the time I came across Krabi on my travel and it was a great decision to come to Ao Nang Krabi. Amazing small islands with amazing limestone cliffs and beautiful beaches made fall in love with Ao Nang Krabi. There are more than 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi, but I will share only top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi so that you don’t get too overwhelmed!
Top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi
1. Go to Railay Beach
The first thing to do on Top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi list is going to Railay Beach! Railay Beach will be the top reason why people decide to come to Ao Nang Krabi. Railay beach is famous for its stunning limestone cliffs and beautiful beach. It can only be reached by boat. Thanks to its remoteness, Railay Beach is not as crowded as many popular beaches in Thailand. You will love it here!
- How to get to Railay Beach: You can reach Railay beach by Taxi boat. You can buy a round-trip ticket for 200 baht at Ao Nang boat ticket booth and they will take you to Railay West. The last boat from Railay beach is at 6:00 pm. If you miss the boat, you have to hire a private longtail boat to come back to Ao Nang Beach
2. Phra Nang Beach & Phra Nang Cave
Phra Nang Beach
The second thing I recommend on Top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi list will be relaxing on Phra Nang Beach. Phra Nang Beach is actually located on Railay East. You can walk to Phra Nang Beach and it takes about 15-20 minutes from Railay Beach(Railay West). You will see beautiful caves and monkeys as well on your walk to Phra Nang Beach. (Don’t bring food unless you want monkeys to get too close to you!
After 20 minutes of walk, you will arrive at beautiful Phra Nang Beach. I like Phra Nang Beach more than Railay Beach somehow. You will go and decided what’s your favorite! Actually, there is something very special about Phra Nang Beach.
Phra Nang Cave
I guess that you are wondering ‘What’s so special about Phra Nang Cave?’ Phra Nang cave is also called Penis Cave. Penis Cave? Surprise! It’s quite funny to see a shrine(Princess Shrine) surrounded by different sizes of penises at once! I thought it was such a weird combination! Penis and shrine…? That’s why I had to ask one of the locals I know in Ao Nang Krabi.
Princess died in that cave and people started to pray for her. People somehow believe the spirit of the princess make their wishes granted and protect their neighborhood. They bring gifts for the princess. Some people bring incents and flowers. Others bring wooden lingam.
According to local people, your wishes are granted almost 100 percent! I’m not sure whether it’s just a coincidence or it’s the power of the spirit of Princess, three of her friends prayed for a baby at Princess Shrine(Phra Nant Cave), they all got pregnant! Be careful what you wish for at Phra Nang Cave!
3. Rock climbing in Railay, Krabi
The 3rd thing on Top 10 things to do in Krabi is famous for its amazing limestone cliffs. These beautiful limestone cliffs make Ao Nang Krabi a perfect place for rock climbing. I tried a half day course without any prior rock climbing experience. I wasn’t sure it was a good decision to try because I didn’t know what it would be like, but I ended up climbing up for 4 different routes around Diamond Cave. I was really glad to try it. I felt a sense of achievement. If you want to try something new and challenging on your travel in Ao Nang Krabi, Rock Climbing is a perfect thing to try in Ao Nang Krabi.
4. Poda island(Koh Poda)
The 4th thing I enjoyed in Ao Nang Krabi on Top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi is to chill on Poda island! Poda island is one of my favorite islands in Krabi. Its clear turquoise water and amazing limestone cave will make you feel as if you are in a paradise.
Don’t forget to pose in front of the limestone caves! I’m pretty sure that you will look like a cover model. I visited Poda island(Koh Poda) on 4 island tour.
5. Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi
The 5th thing on Top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi will be a bit challenging for you. When I talked about Tiger Cave Temple to one Swiss guy I met at the hostel, he was wondering whether he can see Tiger in the cave or not… Maybe 40 years ago, you would be able to see tigers in Tiger Cave Temple. A monk went to meditate at this cave and found a tiger around the cave. That’s how he named this temple Tiger Cave Temple.
Tiger Cave Temple is not just famous because of Tiger Cave, but because of its tough stairs to climb up to the top! There are 1,237 stairs to climb! I didn’t think it would be so easy to climb up more than 1,000stairs but I didn’t expect it would be that tough!!! I was smiling at the beginning, but I was almost dead. I couldn’t make it up to the top of Tiger Cave Temple without the help of Belgian guys I met at the hostel!
From the top of Tiger Cave Temple, you can enjoy amazing 360 degrees view with beautiful endless mountains and white clouds. Being up this high made me felt like I were in heaven. It’s feeling that is hard to describe. You must go up and feel it! But if you are not that fit, I don’t recommend trying. It’s really tough… Only the ones who are fit and have a strong will can make it to the top of Tiger Cave Temple! 😉
6. Kayaking in Thalane Bay near Ao Nang Krabi
Thalane Bay is 30 minutes away from Ao Nang Krabi. There are both morning tour and afternoon tour. Basically, if you book a tour, the company will pick you up at your accommodation, then you will arrive in Thalane Bay. Depending on the level of water, you will explore different routes around Thalane Bay. I had no Kayaking experience at all, but it was so nice to explore along the canyon. You will paddle through mangrove trees, amazing caves, and small beaches around Thalane Bay.
You will be surrounded by stunning nature. It is so peaceful hearing beautiful sounds of the birds echoing in the Bay and the water hit gently by your paddle. I felt like I was in the middle of paradise that is untouched. It will be a perfect getaway from busy Aonang Krabi.
How to choose your Ao Nang Kayaking tour
You can book a half day or a full day Kayaking tour. I did a half day tour and you can go for Kayaking for 2 hours with a guide. If you are a solo traveler, then you can go together with someone from your hostel. If not, don’t worry! You can go with a tour guide together. (I didn’t book a full day tour because it includes elephant trekking as well. I personally don’t like to ride elephants because I don’t support animal abuse.) Ask your hostel or hotel to book Ao Nang Krabi Kayaking tour if your stay is short. If you have time, it’s always better to compare the price from one tour agency to another.
7.Monkey trail(Pai Plong Beach)
Monkey trail is located at the left end of Ao Nang beach if you come to Monkey trail from the main road. Monkey Trail is a good way to see the monkeys and to work out a bit! This Monkey trail leads to Pai Plong Beach. It takes about 15-20 minutes to get to Pai Plong Beach.
If you want to see monkeys and check out Pai Plong beach, then it’s a perfect idea to go for Monkey trail! But monkeys there are pretty vicious so don’t bring any food in your bag. These vicious monkeys will steal your food as soon as they smell it!
8. Watch the sunset on Ao Nang Beach
Watching the sunsets is my old time favorite thing to do wherever I go. Ao Nang Beach is no the prettiest beach I’ve ever been to like the ones in Koh Rong Samloem or Gili Air, but sunsets on Ao Nang Beach Krabi is really amazing.
One day you will enjoy sky turning into yellow, another day you will see the beautiful pink sky. Sometimes you will see the amazing rainbow sky, other times you will see the orange sky. It’s just so magical. It’s free and it’s so beautiful that you can’t stop yourself from taking pictures. If you are a sunset lover like me, you will love watching the sunset on Aonang beach.
9. Ao Nang food market (Jame Food Court)
As a foodie myself, I can’t stop talking about how much I love Ao Nang food market! Ao Nang food market is located near Ao Nang Mosque and it opens from noon till midnight. If you are a big fan of seafood, Ao Nang food market is a place for you! Ao Nang Food Market(Jame Food Market) sells fresh seafood like red snapper fish, clams, squids, and shrimps. If you order seafood, they will cook and bring it to you. You can also try regular Thai food, grilled chicken, and delicious pancakes! The best thing about Jame Food Court is that you can enjoy different food at a reasonable price!
You can also walk to Muslim Walking Street to try the street food there in front of Ao Nang Mosque including good chicken Kebob for 50 baht, fried rice & Pad Thai for 50 baht, and fried chicken & Thai sausages starting from 10 baht.
10. Enjoy nightlife in Ao Nang Krabi
Even though you are not a big fan of parties, you want to go out at least once in Nangang Krabi.
Bars in Ao Nang Krabi
If you like live music and like to chill out, both going to Roots Rock Reggae Bar Ao Nang, Coconut bar Ao Nang Krabi, and Boogie Bar will be going to be great things to do in Ao Nang Krabi. If you want to dance, Ao Nang Center point is a place to go. The most famous bar in Center Point is Chang Bar Ao Nang. Chang Bar’s music isn’t the best but it’s enough to make you dance after a couple of beers. The price of Small beers in all these bars start from 100 baht.
Ao Nang Pub Crawl & Krabi Pub Crawl
If you love to party and meet new people, then you should go for Pub Crawl. There are Ao Nang Pub Crawl and Krabi Pub Crawl. Ao Nang Pub Crawl is 400 baht and Krabi Pub Crawl is 450 baht. They all give you Pub Crawl T-shirt, one bucket, and free shots at each bar.
After Doing Top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi
Do you still feel restless after ticking all the boxes on Top 10 things to do in Ao Nang Krabi list? No worries. Here are two more things to do in Ao Nang Krabi.
Emerald Pool and Hot Spring
You can also go to Emerald Pool and Hot Springs in Ao Nang Krabi. But the thing is that Krabi Emerald Pool and Hot Spring is 70 Km away from Ao Nang. You can get there by minivan, a taxi, and a scooter. If you book a tour combined with Emerald Pool, Hot Spring, and Tiger temple for 800 baht. But you have to pay for 400 baht to go to Emerald Pool and Hot Spring. If you have enough time and money, I think it’s not a bad idea to spending your day there.
Krabi Night Market(Chao Fah Night Market)
If you really enjoyed Chiang Mai Night Markets or if you are a big fan of local markets, then I recommend visiting Krabi Night Market. It sells cheap local Thai food and usual tourist souvenirs at a reasonable price. It won’t hurt to visit if you stay long enough in Krabi. If you get to Krabi Night Market from Ao Nang, you can book a trip to get there at any tourist agencies on the street in Ao Nang. It will cost you 200 baht for a round trip.
