Before talking about Top 5 things to do in Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is a final destination of famous slow boat ride from Huay Xai and its numerous Buddhist temples. Luang Prabang’s beautiful old town center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s full of beautiful temples, cute cafes, and restaurants. There are too many things to do in a beautiful place like Luang Prabang! Are you overwhelmed? No worries, I will share only top 5 things to do in Luang Prabang.
1.Go to beautiful Kuang Si Falls
Going to Kuang Si Falls is one of the most popular things to do on top 5 things to do in Luang Prabang list. Many people decide to come (including me) to Luang Prabang after seeing stunning photos of Kuang Si Falls! You will be amazed by the beautiful emerald-colored water of Kuang Si Waterfalls and swim in an icy cold water!
2. Enjoy the 360-degree views of Luang Prabang at the Phou Si Hill (20,000 kips)
If you want to see 360-degree views of Luang Prabang, going up to the Phou Si Hill is a perfect thing to do. Phou Si means a sacred hill. On the way to the top, you can see different Buddha statues and there’s also That Chomsi Pagoda at the top of the hill. It’s a famous place to watch the sunrise and sunset. It is about 100 meters high and it takes about 15 minutes to go to the top. Climbing up to the top of Phou Si Hill can a bit tougher among top 5 things to do in Luang Prabang, but you won’t be regretting about going all the way to the top if you check out the view from the top of Phou Si Hill!
3. Go to Wat Xieng Thong (20,000 kips)
Wat Xieng Thong is a must-see temple in Luang Prabang. Even though you’re not a big fan of temples, it’s good to visit at least one top famous temple Wat Xieng Thong. Wat Xieng Thong’s old wooden Buddha statues, colorful stupas, unique roof decorations, interesting wall paintings will make your visit worthwhile!
- Opening hours: 8 am – 5 pm

- Tip: You have to wear appropriate clothes to go into the temple like other temples. If you don’t, you can rent clothes at the entrance. (Just bring your scarf to cover your shoulder.)
4. Shop and eat at Luang Prabang Night Market
Luang Prabang Night Market has so much to offer. It’s almost as lively as markets in Chiang Mai. You can buy from local handmade bags, paper art, elephant bags, I love Laos T-shirts, fake Adidas jumpers, cute flowery dresses to lovely lanterns to light up your bedroom! (They are all lovely! But don’t forget to bargain! You should get at least 20~50 % discount from “original” price!)
But what I like the most about Luang Prabang Night Market will be food! You can try local curry, fried dumplings, sukiyaki with vegetables, vegetarian buffets, and many other foods.
5.Watch the sunset by the Mekong
Watching the sunset every day the nearby Mekong was my top favorite thing to do in Luang Prabang. The sunsets were amazing and there wasn’t the same sunset each day at least while I was staying in Luang Prabang. So don’t expect the sunset you’ve seen yesterday would be the same as today. My everyday ritual was to go to one of Mekong river bars on Khem Khong street (click here to see the location on the map), order one bottle of Beerlao and watch the miracle that sun, sky, and the clouds created.
- Tip: Usually, river bars charge 15,000 kips for a big bottle of Beerlao, but if you search more, you can find a river bar selling a big bottle of Beerlao for 10,000 kips. (= $1.23 = 1.11 euro =44 baht)
