Mount Batur sunrise trekking in Ubud? Why not?!
My friend was telling me about Mount Batur sunrise trekking. Watching the Sunrise on the top of Mount Batur sounded really tempting but I didn’t feel like getting up so early in the morning to go hiking since I love to sleep in… But I just decided to do Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking since I’ve ticked the boxes of things on a to-do list in Ubud.
1:30 am in Ubud
The alarm woke me up. It was 1:30am. My friend and I only slept a little more than an hour after talking hours and hours before we fell asleep. We were too sleepy to go for hiking in the middle of the night. The excitement we had when we booked Mount Batur sunrise hiking was gone already. I wasn’t sure we could make it to the top of the mountain to see the sunrise. But we had to get ready for a sunrise trekking at Mount Batur anyway and went to the place where we should meet with a driver.
Did you forget to pick us up?
We started to feel a bit nervous when the driver didn’t come to pick us up at the appointed time. The driver was late for 10 minutes, but it was all good. At least, we didn’t blow our money. 😉
A long way to mount Batur
After the driver picked us up, it stopped like 7 times to take other people in the car Finally, everyone was in the car, I felt relieved. It was too early in the morning, nobody in the van was social. The combination of lacking sleep and the silence made me fall asleep. But thanks to the driver’s wild driving and bumpy roads, I woke up a few times. The car didn’t sound that good and I didn’t feel safe. But I had to trust his driving skill and hoped that we could be at Mt. Batur on time.
The breakdown in the middle of the night
All of sudden, I heard a weird noise from the back of the car. After a few minutes or so, the driver pulled up the car somewhere and he asked us to get off the car to check. All of us were puzzled what was going on in the middle of nowhere. We were all too sleepy to ask questions like ‘What happen to the car? When do you think you’re going to fix the problem? What should we do if you can’t fix the car?’ to the driver. And it didn’t make sense at all to complain to him while he was doing his best to figure out the problem.
It was so annoying that the dog of the house where the car was pulled up kept barking nonstop. And my friend and I started to feel agitated. I thought people there felt the same as us. It was 3:00 am. We should be arrived near Mt. Batur by 4am so that we could watch the sunrise. If the driver couldn’t fix the car, we would miss Mount Batur sunrise trekking. I didn’t even want to think about the worst scenario…
The moment I thought I couldn’t take it anymore, I let out a big sigh and looked up the sky to distract myself. There were so many stars in the sky. Countless shining stars in the dark blue sky! When was the last time I’ve seen hundreds of stars like this? Yes, it was 10 years ago when I was on 3000 meters somewhere near Tibet. The stars so bright and they looked like they were about to fall from the dark blue sky. It was so beautiful that it is hard to describe.
Am I being too positive?
Yeah, everything happens for a reason… I found the reason why our van had a flat tire! To show me this countless beautiful stars. Was I too positive? Was I justifying the situation? Yeah, maybe… whatever! It wasn’t too bad to have a flat tire after all. If we all couldn’t make it to Mount Batur, it must be our destinies not to see Mount Batur’s amazing sunrise.
Can we watch the sunrise on Mount Batur?
But the driver managed to change the tire! Everyone was clapping hands. I was so glad that I could go to Mt. Batur! The van was running its way to Mt. Batur as soon as everyone was got in the car.
Time for Mount Batur Sunrise trekking!
When we got to our destination, the driver introduced us three hiking guides. We were handed flashlights, water bottles, and breakfast boxes. That meant it was time to walk up the top of Mount Batur!
At first, I was talking to my friend and a guide. As we walked like 10 minutes, the mountain showed its true color! It was getting steep! My friend and I didn’t see this was coming. According to our travel agent, Mount Batur Sunrise Hiking only takes about 1 hour and a half and not that difficult!
Who said hiking Mount Batur is easy?!
But it turned out it wasn’t easy at all. It was the first time for me and my friend to hike the mountain in the dark! Also, we weren’t that fit either. My friend told me she was never going to go for hiking ever again on her vacation! We wanted to stop hiking but we didn’t want to give up.
Keep on climbing
There was only one way to make us feel better. Keep going up to the top! After stopping and taking a rest like 5 times, we finally reached the first Mt. Batur Sunrise viewpoint. The sky was still dark. We sat down on the bench and waited for the Sun to rise.
The Sunrise on the top of Mount Batur
The dark blue sky is turning lighter and lighter. The silence. The clouds. The cold wind. I could feel the energy around. The Sun was rising. The sky was slowly showing its warmth to the world. The yellow, the green, the blue, the orange, …. finally the sky turned strong orange to red. I was speechless. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life. It was amazing. I was so glad my friend and I made it to Mount. Hard work really paid us off.
