Before talking about Top 10 things to do in Basel, Switzerland
Basel is the second biggest city in Switzerland and it is located near the border of both France and Germany. One of the best things about being a traveler here in Basel is that most of the tourist attractions are next to each other. This helps tourists in Basel easier to travel. There are so many things to do in Basel! I personally chose to wander around the city to take full advantage of the sunny and hot summer weather in Basel instead of going to museums and galleries like Kunstmuseum(Fine Arts Museum Basel) and Basel History museum! This post Top 10 things to do in Basel is for travelers who are lucky to visit Basel on hot and sunny days!
Top 10 things to do in Basel, Switzerland
1.Marketplatz and Rathaus (Basel)
The first thing to do on Top 10 things to do in Basel list is to check out Marketplatz and Rathaus. Rathaus is a perfect starting point to explore Basel. It is located right in front of Marketplatz. As soon as you arrive at Marketplatz, you will notice this amazing building Rathaus immediately. Rathaus is Basel Town Hall. But it’s so beautiful that it will make you feel like you are inside the museum or gallery not in a town hall. The red sandstone walls, sophisticated shapes of the arches, rectangular shaped windows and beautiful paintings on the wall will be enough reasons for you to visit Rathaus Basel!
2.Basel Old Town
The second thing to do on Top 10 things to do in Basel is to explore amazing Basel Old Town! Strolling through Basel’s Old Town was one of the most lovely things to do in Basel. I spent more than 3 hours just by wandering around Basel Old Town. Its colorful doors and windows of houses in Medieval Basel Old Town are so beautiful! It’s a perfect place to take postcard-like photos!
3. Mittlere Brücke and Rhine River
After visiting Rathaus, you can reach Rhine River through Mittlere Brücke (It means middle bridge). It’s really relaxing to sit by Rhine River. I really enjoyed watching boats, seeing different people, and having small talk with locals by Rhine River.
4. Take a short Rhine River boat trip
After soaking the sun and enjoying the stunning view by Rhine River, why don’t you cross Rhine River with a boat? This Rhine River boat trip was the shortest boat trip I’ve ever done on my 2-years-travel. It was a few minutes boat ride. Say hello to Captain, pay, and after a couple of minutes, you are already on the other side of Rhine River. Magic! After getting off the boat, you can walk up to Münsterplatz square.
5. Enjoy Street performance at Münsterplatz square
I think traveling is not only just about busy going from one place to another to see all the famous tourist attractions but also feeling the vibes of the place. If you are with me, Münsterplatz square is a perfect place to enjoy the vibes of Basel. When I went there, two classical music artists playing the music. It was so beautiful hearing their beautiful music and watching kids playing around.
6. Münsterplatz Basel
Going to Münsterplatz Basel is something you can’t miss out on my Top 10 things to do in Basel list! Münsterplatz Basel Gothic exterior and has two tall towers. One is St. Martin’s and the other one is St. George’s. St. Martin’s tower is 65.50 and St. George’s tower is 67.30 meters tall. Münsterplatz Basel’s Gothic exterior and Romanic interior are really impressive.
Are you going up to St. Martin’s Tower? Or St. George’s Tower?
You can go up to the towers and enjoy amazing views but only if you are with another person for safety reasons. I went up to the towers thanks to another Danish traveler who I met there. You have to take more than 250 steps and the stairs are quite steep and narrow. You will understand why you can’t go up alone. It’s quite scary if you imagine being there all alone! Luckily, I could go up to St. George’s! The stunning view from the top of Münsterplatz Basel is definitely rewarding and you will be happy to be all the way up. You can look down beautiful Basel from the top of the tower! I highly recommend going up to the tower! Workout and amazing view! Who can say no to that?!
This Spalentor is one of the 3 remainings from Basel’s ancient town. I went to the one in Basel Old Town. It is pretty well-preserved and the area around Spalentor is really nice to take a walk. It’s nice to check it out.
8. Basel Street Art
Another cool thing to do on Top 10 things to do in Basel is to enjoy Basel street art! I was pleasantly surprised by unexpected cool street arts around Basel! If you are a street art lover like me, you will enjoy finding street arts in some random street!
9. Tinguely fountain
Tinguely fountain is created by Swiss Kinetic artist Jean Tinguely in 1977. It’s a big shallow fountain with sculptural machines near Theatre Basel. The machine makes beautiful soothing sounds with water. If you are curious about his work, you can check out Tinguely fountain on your way to Offene Kirche Elisabethen church.
10. Explore Basel’s countryside
The last thing to do in Basel, Switzerland is to explore beautiful Basel’s countryside. There are many small towns around Basel. I went one hour to see a scenic view of the Swiss countryside that I’ve seen on Instagram. It is covered with endless green fields and cute lovely houses. While you are walking in the small villages, you feel like you are in a fairy tale or something especially if you are from Asia who grew up living in tall flashy buildings and busy streets.
